On March 2nd, 2013, the Department of Geography and Environmental Studies began what many in the department hope will be a new tradition. With the help of many volunteers, we organized a potluck dinner and social evening at a nearby community centre. Because we had the space, we were able to include partners and children as well as faculty and graduate students. About 60 adults and 20 kids were in attendance and all the feedback we’ve heard about the evening so far has been very positive.
Although the organizing of the event seemed daunting at first, given that we needed to rent dinnerware, apply for a bar license and hire a bartender to run a cash bar among other tasks, the many volunteers who helped with all aspects of the evening made all the difference. We were even able to put together a terrific slide show full of amazing photos to entertain those who wished to take a break from all of the great conversations that were going on. The younger set had their own space, supervised by parent volunteers who brought all sorts of games and crafts to keep them happily occupied. Meanwhile, the parents were able to take turns in the adult space next door. The food was outstanding – we’re quite certain that no one came away hungry!
